More than simply putting fresh wax on the surface

A Barbour jacket can collect dirt, perspiration, stale odours, mould and years of old wax throughout the outer fabric and lining. Applying more dressing may improve the surface appearance, but it cannot remove contamination trapped inside the garment.

Wax Jackets Cleaned starts by cleaning the jacket inside and outside. Once the garment has been cleaned and assessed, the selected wax finish is applied by hand. Repairs, alterations and restoration work can be carried out as part of the same complete service.

We do not offer a re-wax-only service. Our policy is to clean the complete garment before fresh wax is applied.

Cleaning, reproofing, repairs and restoration in one place

Every jacket is assessed individually according to its fabric, colour, age, condition and previous treatment.

01

Inside-and-out cleaning

The lining, pockets, collar areas and waxed outer are cleaned as part of the complete garment.

02

Odour removal

Specialist treatment for jackets affected by stale storage smells, perspiration, smoke or general wear.

03

Mould treatment

Careful cleaning for Barbour jackets stored in damp sheds, garages, lofts or other unsuitable conditions.

04

Hand re-waxing

The selected finish is applied by hand after cleaning and then encouraged to settle into the cotton.

05

Repairs and alterations

Work can include worn cuffs, damaged linings, zips, pockets, seams, tears, hems and other problem areas.

06

Vintage restoration

Older Barbour jackets can be assessed with the aim of retaining their character while making them wearable again.

The important service difference

A re-wax-only service is not the same as cleaning a jacket

Many jacket services concentrate on applying fresh wax to the outer surface. This may refresh the appearance and reproof the fabric, but fresh wax cannot clean a dirty lining, remove embedded contamination or deal with smells and mould trapped inside the garment.

Wax Jackets Cleaned provides a complete inside-and-out clean before the jacket is hand re-waxed. The comparison shows the typical difference between a re-wax-only service and our complete cleaning, re-waxing and restoration process.

  • The lining, pockets, collar and outer fabric all form part of the clean.
  • Dirt, stale odours and contamination are treated before new wax is applied.
  • Mould-affected and badly stored jackets can receive specialist treatment.
  • Repairs can be assessed and completed as part of the same service.

When others say no

Very few Barbour jackets are beyond an honest assessment

We regularly receive Barbour jackets whose owners tell us they have been declined for work by Barbour or another service. Heavy dirt, mould, strong odours, age, extensive wear, earlier repairs or visible damage do not automatically mean that a jacket is beyond saving.

As independent wax-jacket specialists, we can look beyond a standard re-wax-only service. Where appropriate, we can combine complete inside-and-out cleaning with mould and odour treatment, specialist repairs, alterations, restoration and hand re-waxing.

Let us see the jacket before giving up on it

We very rarely turn a jacket away without first considering its actual condition. Send us clear photographs of the front, back, lining and any damaged or heavily affected areas, and we can go from there.

  • Show the complete jacket inside and outside.
  • Include close-ups of mould, tears, worn areas, cuffs, pockets and zips.
  • Tell us about smells, storage conditions and any previous repairs.
  • We will explain honestly what can realistically be achieved.

A jacket that is unsuitable for a standard manufacturer service may still be a strong candidate for specialist restoration.

Repair rather than replace

Specialist Barbour repairs and alterations

Waxed cotton needs thoughtful repair work. Where suitable materials and components are available, we aim to retain the age, colour and character of the original garment rather than making an old jacket look artificially new.

  • Worn cuffs and lower sleeves
  • Damaged tartan linings and pockets
  • Main zips and fastening areas
  • Tears, worn edges, hems and seams
  • Matched waxed-cotton fabric using donor garments where possible

Common questions

Barbour jacket cleaning FAQs

Can you clean the inside of my Barbour jacket?

Yes. The service cleans the complete jacket inside and outside before the selected wax finish is applied.

Can you remove a bad smell from a Barbour jacket?

We regularly work on jackets affected by stale storage smells, perspiration, smoke and damp conditions. Results depend on the garment, contamination and its history, so no identical result can be guaranteed for every jacket.

Can a mouldy Barbour jacket be cleaned?

Many mould-affected wax jackets can be made clean and wearable again. The jacket must be assessed individually because fabric damage, permanent marks or colour changes may remain after treatment.

Do you offer Barbour re-waxing without cleaning?

No. Wax Jackets Cleaned provides a complete clean-and-re-wax service and does not apply fresh wax over an uncleaned garment.

Can you repair Barbour cuffs, linings, pockets and zips?

Yes, subject to inspection and the availability of suitable materials or components. Photographs can support a rough initial estimate, but confirmed pricing normally follows physical inspection.

How much does Barbour jacket cleaning cost?

Cleaning and re-waxing prices currently start from £55 for many standard jackets. Size, length, wax choice, repairs, accessories and return postage can change the total. Please check the current pricing page before sending.

Will my Barbour look brand new?

No responsible restoration service can guarantee a brand-new appearance. Age, staining, wear, repairs and previous treatment all affect the final result. The aim is to make the jacket clean, wearable, better protected and restored as well as realistically possible.

Will cleaning or re-waxing change the colour?

It can. Wax commonly darkens cotton and the amount of change varies between fabrics, colours, garment age and the selected finish. Read the current wax-finish information before choosing.
